Tranny Swap

Featured Replies

I have been reading post about doing a 4spd auto AWD to a 5spd stick. Some of the post say the same thing but some are different. I want to know what trannys from what years will work. I have an 89 GL-10 turbo wagon. I know I need the tranny, diff, drive shaft, shifter, flywheel, clutch cable, and pedal. I think I read if I use a 5spd out of a n/a car I will need the axles too. Are the number of splines the same on the outer shafts of the axles the same, or will I need the hubs too? I know where about 10 Gl- 10s are in a pull-a-part JY. I just wanted to know which trans would work.

I believe your shafts should work. I know when I did my 3at to 5spd swap...the axles from the automatic worked on the 5speed. All the hubs are the same

I just did this to my best friends gl-10

You will need:

flywheel

clutch and cable

pedal set out of a clutch car

shifters and console

tranny crossmember

driveshaft

rear diff if the gears in the tranny are different. Usually the manuals are 3.9 and the auto in the gl10 is a 3.7.

If the tranny comes out of a non turbo and your car is a turbl you will have to change the front axles due to a differing spline count.

Once you are done you will have to jump the wires for the neurtal safety switch or the car will nto start. I'm not sure which ones they are, but I cn check with my friend and then I can let you know if you want. PM me and et me know what guidance you need. It took us about eight hours to swap trannys on two cars at the same time. I was putting a D/R in my gl turbo and he was taking my parts for his car as the auto tranny had gone out. He loves the 5spd and man does it have some guts.

Good luck

I am going to the JY this Saturday. I wanted to know if I need any speciail tools I should take to get the trans off. And I have never taken a manual trans mission so I wanted to know if I need to make sure I do anything before I pull it out. The auto was simple enouft to get out. Hopefully I will be able to drive my car by the end of this weekend.

Could some one answer the question i posted last.

Thanks!

if the tranny you will be using is non turbo, you will need the axles too. turbo 5spds and 4spd automatics are 23 splines.

non turbo and 3spd ats ,even turbo 3spd ats are 23 splines.

but ,turbo 3spds have a fatter diameter DOJ that is swappable onto a 25 spline axle

If the other car is non turbo will i only need the front axles. ?

Yes, the rear axles will fit the new rear end that you will install.

Can anyone give me any tips for taking the 5-spd transmission out? Do I have to unbolt anything like you have to do when you take out an automatic? (Like unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate)

Unbolt the starter, disconnect the clutch cable, unbolt the trans from the car, remove the driveshaft, unbolt the crossmember, and the the tranny will slide right out.

thanks alot. :burnout:

Oh, I forgot, there are also a couple of electrical connectors and the speedo cable.

And you're quite welcome.

Note. Brace the front of the engine on the frame above the radiator, because once you remove the tranny, the engine will shift forward and possibly put a hole in the radiator - unless you already removed it.

I went today and got the transmission, driveshaft, diff, and shifter. There is a diff locking switch but there wasn't anything connected to the diff. I was thinking someone put a different one in. And I read somewhere that the diff should be a LSD if in is off of a 89. I couldn't figure out how to get the clutch pedal assebaly out, dose anyone have any pics or can tell me how to get it out I am going back tomorrow. There where two cables hooked up to the clutch lever on the tranny one went to the pedal, what is the other? And do all of the wireing harnesses hook up the same as it did to the auto?

Thanks alot,

Alex
