97 legacy running rough when in gear and coming to a stop

97 legacy 2.5

after replacing the plugs,wires, and fuel filter, i still have a VERY rough idle... its mainly when you are coming to stop, but when you take it out of gear it goes away (obviously)... i can feel some hesitation in the engine when its idling and im under the hood, and im beginning to suspect it could be the EGR valve...does anyone have any experience with this??? the transmission is also slipping pretty badly and im looking for a low mileage replacement (no rebuilds!)... im also considering just pulling the whole motor and tranny if i can find a low mileage donor....i

 

any information or sources for parts would be appreciated

 

one more thing.....fuel gauge is WAY off... is it a mechanical or electrical gauge, and is there an easy solution???

Mine does the same thing along with others here, the problem seems to be common, no one here has found the answer yet as far as I know. Mine is a 97 Legay wagon 2.2 engine.

My 92 legacy wagon auto AWD does the same. But has been getting a bot worse recently. I've always attributed it to weakening motor/trans mounts, but checking mine recently showed only a little play. Not sure what is normal though. Can also be driveshaft related, worn u-joints perhaps.

i just replaced both front axles at the same time i did the plugs and wires.... ive also replaced and adjusted the TPS sensor

 

at this point im beginning to think the EGR just isnt closing fully like it should when you come to a stop

 

im going to try a used EGR and see if it does anything different, before i spend $120 on a new one

They are people here that claim the front axles causes this problem, I have not bought into this theory but your comment about changing the axles might give it some credit. They claim is the axle is a little longer or shorter then the oringial it will cause the shaking.

i cant understand how that could be? if anyone out there can elaborate im all ears.... the car ran rough before the axles, but got worse yet over time.... the trouble is that i did the axles, fuel filter, plugs, wires, and rotors all at the same time...

 

you would think this would have made the car better!

to me it sounds like the plugs aren't gapped correctly

 

i double checked that as well and im running factory NGK.... when im on the throttle it runs very smooth... its only when its idling.... in the mornings the revs dont like to come down very quick either when its cold and i really have to stand on the brake to stop the car from moving

I will give you a bump back to the top because I know they are people here that claim the axles causes this shaking an they may not have seen this yet. If no one replys give it a search on the search feature under axles or shaking and it should bring some of the discussion from the past back up.

Hey Guys,

This is my first posting on this sight so I hope I have this right.

As it just happens I just had this happen with my 97' Outback. The rough idle can be caused by carbon and gummy oil deposits in the throttle body and on the throttle plate. These deposits don't let the plate close completely resulting in rough idle. Simply remove the air intake, and using your room mates tooth brush and spray carberator cleaner, scrub out the deposits on both sides of the plate and all around the opening. Caution! don't use too much carb cleaner all at once. I flooded mine and had to remove the plugs and dry them before it would run again. But the idle was back to silky smooth!
