cbons
Hi all. Have a 92 legacy wagon. The CV boot blew earlier this winter and it's been driving fine, no click. However, recently I noticed that on the freeway, with no rhyme or reason, the entire car would start to shake, as if it were coming from somewhere deep (not just the steering wheel, but the entire car). I slow down, shift to 4th, let it ride there for about 10 seconds, and then back to 5th and it drives on just fine. I've noticed the problem is exacerbated by keeping it in 5th and accelerating, it almost feels like the thing is going to fall apart around me. However, the car is at 200k, shifting (esp. 1st, 2nd, reverse) can be really hard, literally, at times (esp. when cold), and I want to try and find out if it's the tranny going. If so, might just be easier to find a better condition car and fix that one up then to start a long repair streak with this one. Thanks for any/all suggestions, board has always been helpful w/ probs! Connor
Legacy777
I had a very similar problem with my car when it was still AT. Scared the crap out of me. It only happen once or twice. I replaced the CV axles (which were questionable) and never had a problem again. So I'd probably recommend you replace the axle(s) and see if that fixes your problem. Any idea about how long it takes for a transmission w/ these problems to bite the dust?
nipper
i dont think your tranny is going. There are two possabilities, this sounds like the cv joint is getting ready to go south. What is happening is that when you are transmitting power to the cv joint (car in 5 gear) you have hit the critical load that the axle starts to bind up in the beaings in the cv joint. By shifting to fourth, the axle doesnt have to work as hard, and the axle centers itself back in the cv joint. This will get worse with time. The shifting issue sounds like your clutch is getting tired. When was the last time the car had a clutch changed. Sounds like the clutch is not full releasing. Is it always hard to shift into those gears? Will the car shift into those gears with the car off with ease? nipper

I had my CV axles replaced about 2 months ago, and one is now going again (outer drivers, only when cold it makes a racket during hard acceleration and left turns). In the last month or so I've noticed the car begin to shake a worse while stopped (although sometimes it's worse than others). I wonder if it's related? Well, I'm getting the guy who did it to change it tomorrow, so we'll find out.

The tranny is fine. You can have bad motor mounts. You can have an ignition issues. You may have the wrong length axle. nipper
Chef
Well, turns out it the problem was the threaded fitting that tightens the axles end into the front diff. When the guy put the axles in they replaced those seals, and didn't tighten them appropriately. Hopefully this will fix the problem. (yes I know I am repeating what I wrote in an earlier thread, but it's relevant in both! )
