I have a stupid question about pinion gears ... can't you just make it smaller?

Featured Replies

(for a D/R tranny to make the final drive lower ... sorry I forgot to put this in the first time :drunk: )I'm sure I am over-simplifying this, but what if you could machine a ring gear that has more teeth yet taking the same space, and you were able to make the pinion gear smaller? Wouldn't this effectivly lower the final drive? (I'm SURE this isn't possible since no one has done it yet:-p)

yes, you certainly could, but getting a custom ring and pinion gear set ade up right that meshed right, and was strong, would be gigantic $$$$$$$$$

How did I not see that one comming?:eek::banghead::drunk: we just need to get Subaru to do it! hehe it's a nice thought isn't it? ... maybe when "what's his name" makes a decient place with his Baja 500 brat ... I can dream can't I? :drunk:

Subaru already makes gears as low as 4.44s for the EJ series tranny. But the mesh is different...

The 4.44's R+P's can be found from various 2004/2005 us models or you can buy the ring and pinions from Rallispec for $700. And then install them which will be no cake walk.

Pics can be found in my user gallery.

I've been trying to get some time in the shop so I can stuff the 4.44's in the d/r box. Moving and Buying/selling houses hasn't realy helped lol.
