I guess I would need to know which STi motor you are talking about. As far as I know, any EJ series engine will bolt into any EJ series car. The only real hurtle in such a conversion is the wiring of the ECU for the engine to the car it is being installed in.

Basically they take everything out of the STi, like the ecu, dash, brakes, suspension, etc, and swap it into the RS. Replacing the entire harness is much easier than trying to splice wires together. Plus an RS ecu wouldn't run an sti motor and you need all the dccd stuff.

 

There is a company here in SoCal called aerosim that will take your car and do a full WRX swap for around $6500 and an STi swap for $13000.

 

If you're serious about it I suggest to visit the conversions section of nasioc and do some searching.

Gee Jamal, he did say 97 or so, I took that to mean that he didn't really know when the RS started, and besides, it is not really relivant to what he is asking. I wonder why he would have to go to nasioc.com to get this info, there are a few people who are regulars on this board who have done the conversion. I wish it were just that simple to swap out the wire harnesses, but the instrument panel, the HVAC and other things are different between a 98 RS and a 2005 STi, it isn't a simple swap. If it were so simple as that, there would be a whole lot more people doing it, and the tuner shops wouldn't be charging so much to do the swap. I have, in one way or another, done 5 of these type of conversions.

gee the main point i was trying to get across is that it is possible and that it is easiest to swap the whole harness and dash.

He should do more research before getting into such a project and that there is a whole subforum all about conversions on nasioc.

I don't really think a $1000 93 impreza plus $6000 (which is what I was quoted for a swap into my legacy) is terribly expensive for what you're getting either.

And actually I'm not finding many well documented RS -> WRX/STi swaps here. I found some pictures of your type-r, though. Please post some examples of swaps then.

Like I said, taking my car to aerosim or chaste auto or whatever, giving them $6000, and getting my car back two weeks later with a low mileage WRX motor and transmission and dash doesn't seem all that expensive.

I heard the easiest way to do this swap was to open up the hood of the RS, take the oil cap off, replace the RS with an STi, put the oil cap back on and close the hood.

Maybe so, but the door cards will not, and that will give the car a less then professional look. I guess it is a matter of taste, I prefer a car that has the orginal look, other don't care how their car looks as long as it goes fast.
