3.90 rear LSD question. . .

Featured Replies

I'd like to put an LSD in my 95 legacy (has 3.9) but don't want the hastle of swapping out front and rear diffs for 4.11.

So which vehicles came with factory 3.90 LSD rear that i should search for for the bolt in rear LSD?

There is a rumor that the XT6 came with a 3.90 LSD but it has never been verified. The 1991 Legacy Tubro had a VLSD 3.90 in it, but they are very rare. The easiest thing to do is to find a 3.70 LSD and swap out the centers. Replace the open diff in your 3.90 with the LSD center out the the 3.70, leaving the original ring gear. But all this depends on whether you have the same rear diff as the earlier cars, if not, you have to swap out the LSD from a 4.11 rear diff.

Hmm, yeah I spent an hour at the dealer quizing their 36 year master mechanic... He "remembers" there being a 3.9 LSD, but for the life of him couldn't rememebr where other than they were only on a couple cars..

So finding an LS 4.11 pumpkin and gutting its viscera would likely be way easier than searching the world over?

Which vehicles (95 and up) had them, I guess it was optional or would there be a blanket model/trim I could look for, like 99 outbacks, or '03 feresters, etc?

Thanks for the beta. . .

I'm not sure about the USA models, but I believe most RS 2.5s have them, I know most if not all WRXs have them.

to get around the '95 and up slip in rear axles, just swap in '90-'94 legacy rear axles and diff, then you can swap in any old 3.70 rear lsd... worked on a '98 forrester and a '97 legacy, remember those axles are side specific.

3.90 rear LSD was offered on the XT6, I've seen one in person, like Dr RX said, a RARE item. I say swap a 3.70 unit to whatever ratio you desire.
