March 16, 200620 yr I Just bought my first Subaru! It is a 1987 GL wagon, carb, 5 speed, 4x4. 176k miles, decent body and interior, suspension seems good, only problem is blown engine, but for 200 bucks I cant complain. I guess I am going to be attempting the ea81 engine into ea82 car swap, as I found a complete 84 ea81 engine with 100k for 160 off of ebay with local pickup! Wish me luck, I am anxious to drive my new car!

March 16, 200620 yr You have plenty of resources (board members) in your area if you get stuck. So...what kind of parts don't you need on your 84... Welcome to the board, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester
March 16, 200620 yr Author Thanks, not sure what parts I will have leftover, I dont know what I am going to have to mix and match yet, but will let you guys know if I have something I dont need when I am done.
March 17, 200620 yr how is your otor blown up? head gaskets can be fixed. broken timing belts dont hurt anything the intake on the 87 will fit on an ea81 if you go that route
March 17, 200620 yr Is this the one that was on C/L that was run without oil? Lotsa us denver guys are around...Ask for help anytime Thanks Erik
March 17, 200620 yr Is this the one that was on C/L that was run without oil? Lotsa us denver guys are around...Ask for help anytime Thanks Erik Sounds like the one. If so, it probably can't be fixed too easily. But putting another engine in it is a good option. I've never done the EA81-EA82 swap -- wish I'd known about it a few years ago when I blew the engine in my '85, and had a good '84 parts car. If I'd known about this forum back then, I wouldn't have hesitated to tackle that.
March 17, 200620 yr Hmm, EA81 in an EA82 chassis... going to have some space to play with. Maybe shove a few big subwoofers under the bonnet and make it sound like one of those big gurgly offset-crank V8's
March 17, 200620 yr Author yep, was the one on C/L that was run without oil... rest of the car is in decent shape so I figured I would tackle a engine swap. I found an ea81 in westminster with 100k miles on ebay and the seller said he would do local pickup. I guess the guy he got it from destroyed the suspension on a curb that last snowstorm we got. I dont think it will be too bad of a swap, 84 carbed into an 87 carbed, both manuals. I will definately be asking for help on here if we get stuck on the swap.
March 20, 200620 yr Author Update: unhooked a bunch of stuff to get engine ready for pull, and hmm, no antifreeze from the radiator hoses. Drained the "oil" about a cup of oil came out, then lots of fresh bright green antifreeze... I know this can be from broken block/heads, but there was a whole lot in there. I am wondering if someone along the lines thought the oil fil was for the radiator... looks like it except it says "ENGINE OIL" on top of it. Jeez no wonder the engine is toast
