April 20, 200619 yr How rebuildable is the turbo off of my 88 GL 1.8L? Has anyone had one apart? I belive the one in my Sub has come apart or the bearing has gone out. I have a spare to put in it but it is old and the seals and bearing should probably be replaced before install. Is there someplace I can find a good break down diagram of the inside of the turbo?
April 20, 200619 yr The problem with rebuilding turbo's is that after they are apart they will need to be balanced dynamically.I have rebuild a couple of turbos and it is a good idea to have a stand to be able to balance them on.Very easy to rebuild a turbo but...if you do not balance it chances are it will not last as long. There is a company I can refer you to located in golden,co.They rebuild turbo's and such and are fairly resonable on prices and are very good.Good luck. http://www.turboengineering.com/
April 22, 200619 yr another option would be installing a TD04 turbo from a impreza it will give you more power in higher rpm's, and it needs some modification, but it's a good alternative if rebuilding or bying a used/new one isn't a option.
April 25, 200619 yr One bolt on the up-pipe flange has to moved about half an inch back. and the compressor outlet points toward the flywheel as opposed to straight up. No big deal, plenty of board members have done it who will be happy to help you out
April 25, 200619 yr I wouldn't worry to much about rebuilding a turbo that's gone bad. Usually the only thing salvaged from a unit is the center housing. Typically, when a bearing goes, the wheel on that side will hit the housing, the shaft will at the very least get burned if not bent, so all has to be replaced and balanced. For most turbos, you can get a rebuilt center section with wheels installed from Napa. Just slap on your old outer housings, and go.
May 4, 200619 yr Author Well I did tare into it after I got another just to see what was there( it's just my nature). I think I had it into more parts then was originally put into it. I called several parts stores around and no one could locate any of the bearings or seals, and of course the blades were bent beyond help. I found one at a recking yard resonable. Trouble is you don't know how long it will last. Subaru wanted $1200 for a new one. NAPA told me they couldn't get a rebuilt. Must have talked to the wrong guy. Thanks for the imput.
