Gasket leaks (not HG)

Is it normal to have to replace multiple gaskets, other than head gaskets, on a 98 Outback, AT, with 80,000 miles? My dealer tells me I need to replace the trany separator plate gasket, valve cover gaskets and 2 or 3 others...to the tune of $2000. We're starting with the trany separator ($800) since it leaks the most and on the exhaust - that stinks.

It is normal to replace all the gaskets and seals when they are old, but that price is pretty high to me. The seperator is a common problem.

See if you can find an independent mechanic for half that money.

what is he calling the tranny seperator gasket? I know of an oil seperator, but that is a plate at the rear of the engine. Your original one was plastic, and should be replaced with a metal one. They tend to crack and leak, so replacing it is a good idea.

 

The valve cover gaskets, cam seals, and front crank seal (along with the oil pump O-ring) are a good thing to replace if they leak at all

First question, were you complaining about an oil leak?

(never mind re read the post). He has to take the engine out to repalce the plate gasket. Its another oh 10 minutes worth of work per side to replace the valve cover gaskets)

If you were asking if he should do the work, i would say NO! hes is over chargning you on that estimate, but its too late hes doing the work now. What were the other gaskets?

Exhaust gaskets should be no extra labor. Valve cover gaskets they could maybe charge an hour minimum labor, but if he was a good guy he wouldnt charge anything.
