no power to front wheels

Featured Replies

Just driving on a 100km trip yesterday and all of a sudden I lost all power to the front wheels?? they dont engage with gears. so i have had to put it into 4wd and just drive with rear wheel drive only (cant be good for the rear dif!!)

Any ideas?????

Did you hear any bad noises before this happened?

Check your front axles; if one of them failed the front diff would send all of the power to that side. Also check the splines of the front hubs because they can strip out.

Another possibility is some kind of failure of the front diff itself. I.E. a broken gear or stub axle. It's also not unheard of that a stub axle will pop out of the front diff.

Simplest possibility is that the castle nut was loose and stripped out the splines on one side. After that check on what Craig suggested.

yep, to check this, remove both front hubcaps, put the car back in 2WD, put the ebrake on, then 'drive' while a friend watches the castle nut on the end of each axle. If one spins independently of the wheel, that hub is stripped, so you'll need a new hub at the very least.

Happened to me a couple times. First was real bad noise, banging and clashing in my tranny, second was a little shudder in my steering wheel and pop no go. The rear end will hold up to driving. Pull the e-brake and lay some rubber.:burnout:
