Madskillzracer02 Posted May 31, 2006 Share Posted May 31, 2006 So im looking to buy a 1995 Subaru Impreza.. 140,000 miles, auto, a/c, and i dunno what else for $1700 from a guy i work with... i was wondering what i need to look for when i go look at it, and what kinda problems these cars have...i only have about $2K, so im not looking for a fixer upper... also, what is the potential in these cars including engine swaps... i also would like to swap the tranny for a standard (i get bored, and by meaning bored, i mean i like to double foot it ). Take really tight figure 8s in a parking lot and see if there is and torque bind or clunking. I think it has a 1.8L, I know nothing about them. I think it could be 2.2 AWD and Auto, or 1.8 FWD and Auto. Easiest way to know these things is to look at the car. Look under the rear of the car for a rear diff and half shafts... they make it AWD. Then Look on the engine under the alternator for either an EJ18 or EJ22 "stamped" into the block. This will tell you the engine size. Any info would be greatly appreciated, as i know nothing about Subarus, but a hole helluva lot about Hondas THANX A BUNCH! well, you didn't give us a whole lot of information...Blue Book in area code 85701 for that car is as follows (put in as fair condition) L Sedan 4D fwd: $1625 awd: $2365 L Coupe 2D fwd: $1525 awd: $2265 LX Sedan 4D awd: $3125 LX Coupe 2D awd: $2900 those are the only options in the car that fit with your description. there's also wagons as well as models that only come in manual. so, based on those prices off of KBB i'd say that it's either the L Sedan 2 or 4 door FWD/ something's wrong with it so that it doesn't fit into the "Fair" catagory/ or you have a good friend who's giving you a good price. i'd probably go with the second option. It looked like a good price until I saw that it was FWD only. Very hard to find a decent Impreza with the 2.2 engine, manual, low miles, and good condition for under $3500 but you might get lucky and find one for around $2500 to $3000. My son found a '96 wagon with manual and 2.2 engine for $3200 about two years ago but he was very lucky. He jumped on it immediately (took time off from work to do it) and had the money in his pocket. I was fortunate to get a nice '94 sedan recently for an even $3000 but it had the EJ18 engine and some minor body damage.(http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58879) . LosDiosDeVerde86 Posted June 1, 2006 Share Posted June 1, 2006 An engine swap is fairly easy; but a FWD tranny to AWD tranny is harder and likely more expensive. well, yeah, obviously. you're not just swapping the tranny, you're doing the a new driveshaft setup, rear end, and axles. you'll also need new rear struts because the fwd rear struts don't fit the awd rear struts. you're better off buying an awd instead of a fwd and swapping. unless you like projects.
