found a hatch in need of TLC

Featured Replies

Found an 87 hatch GL 4wd in my town..looks like its been sitting for about 3 years or so. The tires are flat, fenders are rusted and rear quarters are kind of rusted. I am considering offering some money to the guy and taking it out of there to fixn it up a bit and use it for fun. There is only 74k miles on it and the paint is in pretty good shape. What do you guys think I should do? How much to offer??

First see if he wants you to just take it off his hands, ya know get it out of his yard or whatever. If it's all there and he wants some money offer him $100. Outside of our little circle, people don't put a very high value on these cars, I bought a running hatch for $5, running Brat for $100, etc...

With only 74k there's probably not much wrong with it other than the rust, tires and fuel issues from sitting for a long period of time.

That car could be TONS of fun! Definitely look into it!

start low then offer more , thats the way i kinda found my rust free 88 dl wagon [ timing was off ]

yeah, definatly start low, like 1-200, then work up to around $400, if needed, but i wouldn`t go a whole lot higher. the fenders, rockers, and quarters are just cosmetics, make sure the unibody rails, shock mounts, and strut towers are all solid, that is what really matters for a beater. i bet the tires would pump right up, they are probly just flat from sitting. bring a jumper and some starting fluid if you do buy it, cause usually these ea81s crank right up, or usually its an easy fix to get one running.

whatever you do, make sure you have a solid ride for the offroad meet!

Thanks for the input guys. Turns out that my girlfriends bros friends dad owns the place so it may work out well hehe. From what I saw the unibody and frame rails look OK. I need to check the strut mounts under the hood to see if there is rust or rot..hopefully not! Im definitely gonna start low on this because its just sitting there.

Will I have any trouble finding the fenders for this vehicle?? There is rot rght at the corner of the pass. fender. The drivers fender looks to be dented from a collision but not too too bad.

i have the right side fender for you (free) i can probly deliver it on my way to hazelton in july if everything works out....
