El Toro
my coil is shot in my 1981 wagon 2WD. so i have been checking for a good after market one and have found that quite a few people are loving there ACCEL Coil. however my wagon (being a 2WD and all) has a external resistor with a igniter assembly and has a code on it that says 12V-S. sadly all the ACCEL coils i have checked out on the web do not say if they can be used with this setup. does anyone know if ACCEL makes one in this compilation? and if so do you know the part number? edit: so some do not like the ACCEL coil. if this is you let me know what you prefer (in the application stated above)
GeneralDisorder
There was a huge debate about this - do a search - it will turn up. Short story - Accel changed their supplier to a different factory in Mexico, and after that all the Accel coils have sucked, and have an alarmingly high failure rate. There is a Napa part number that is the same as the old Accel before they switched - search will turn it up I'm sure. As for the coil - you should be able to use any coil - the while ignitor thing should just swap over. That said, you will get pretty much zilch for your effort, and are endagering the life of the ignitor. The ignitor is matched in resistance to the coil, and you can cause them to blow if you change one and not the other with a matched unit. Best thing to do is get an 82+ distributor, coil (OEM), and internally regulated alt and convert the thing. Better system, and simpler too. El Toro
after thinking about it sounds like the conversion is the only way to go. so off to the junk yard for parts. i will pick up distributor, coil (OEM), and internally regulated alt. anything else i might need? any tips? GeneralDisorder
I haven't personally done the conversion, but many people have. I would make a new post and see what others have done. You'll probably want at least part of the donor car's wireing harness, and you may need to run a couple wires, but it's not near as complex as the old system you have. azsubaru
I had an Accel 8140. It was a real POS, couldn't recommend it at all. I recently obtained a used Accel Super Coil, model 140001, one of the big ones, and it is working fine so far. You can get external resistors from Accel to make it work properly. There's a pdf instruction file here: http://go.mrgasket.com/InstructionSheetsList.aspx?BrandID=3 In fact, the coil will work if you just replace the stock coil, but that is supposed to be hard on the transistor, so not recommended.
