My [EA81] Temp. Guage lost its Composure

Featured Replies

For some reason my dash temp. guage is not functioning. I'm not sure if I need to replace the sender unit or what. At first it was sitting at the low point, and after sitting for a week or two it is max'd out. It broke while I was driving.

Any input would be helpful!

I just went to a local marine store the other day and spent $14 for a Teleflex sending unit and $22 for a Teleflex gauge. I tapped out the sending unit port to 3/8", screwed it in, ran a wire to the gauge and hooked it up with the ignition wire and ground.. Works like a champ plus it's completely weather proof.. Of course my EA81 engine is in a boat..

Test the wiring and gauge: Check to see what the gauge's "state" is (is it still maxed when you just turn on the ignition, or is it at lowest reading?

Now, with the ignition stil on, disconnect the wire from the sender unit; the gauge should now be at its lowest reading. Ground the disconnected wire, using paperclip, wire, screwdriver, whatever; the gauge should be maxed out.

Assuming that you got the min and max readings, your wire and gauge are OK. If not, then either the wire or the guage have an issue.

Thanks, I'll test it out.
