  1. I know the 32/36 Weber is not smog legal. All emmissions equip is plugged or bypassed with the Weber.. It wont pass...
  2. I have a Samurai also and thought about this at one time. I know you'd have trouble trying to fit an opposing cyl. engine between the frame rails. I thought about an EA81 or EA82, took a few measurements and abandoned the idea. The valve covers would stick through the fender wells.
  3. Sounds like a carb rebuild is needed to me... Every time I had fuel related issues in a soob, I had the carb rebuilt at a reliable shop. Fixed the problem every time..
  4. It seems high, but I'd give between 5 and 6 grand for that one, especially with only 66K miles and in such really nice condition.. Heck, I recently paid $5 grand for a 87 Samurai with 3 times the miles, but everything on the truck was mint... I'd say it's worth the money as a classic in that condition..
  5. The first problem is getting the bolt out of the block. Good luck with the drilling. I recently drilled a broken exhaust stud out of a head and used a Heli-coil to fix it back up. For a head stud, you may want to talk to a machine shop and have them make you what's called a "step stud" (larger on one end).. You can tap the block to a larger diameter install the new stud. I've used a few of them before and they work well.
  6. I just went to a local marine store the other day and spent $14 for a Teleflex sending unit and $22 for a Teleflex gauge. I tapped out the sending unit port to 3/8", screwed it in, ran a wire to the gauge and hooked it up with the ignition wire and ground.. Works like a champ plus it's completely weather proof.. Of course my EA81 engine is in a boat..
  7. I had one leaking on a Chevy pickup of mine a while back. Called a fuel pump pulsator, or dampener... The guy in parts told me to take it out and splice the hose with a coupler.. I took it out... No change noticed in anything.. My recommendation: Take it off and leave it off... Spend a few bucks on a hose coupler and a couple of new clamps and be done with it..
  8. What bike did the front end come from? And is the frame your own design, a kit or a manufactured frame? Beautiful trike...
  9. Looking at the pictures from you EA82 Weber job, it looks like the intake throat and adapter bores were mis-matched as well. In your case, the intake bore looked a little smaller, whereas my EA81 adapter plate bore was smaller? I believe I would have taken the intake and milled the bore to match the adapter bore. Don't really know if it matters or not.. I'm sort of funny about things that don't quite fit perfect.. In all, good job with the hoses and stuff. Looks really clean under the hood.
  10. I didn't need to use the linkage kit that came with the carb. I took the linkage off of the Hitachi and it fit perfectly on the Weber throttle shaft, as well as lined up with the cable.
  11. I agree that the Redline adapter is not as well made as some others may be. My Redline adapter lined up with the intake and carb bolt holes perfectly, but that's about as good as it gets. The adapter bore didn't match the intake throat bore very well. It over lapped in one spot and and looked more restrictive than the intake itself. I took it to my machinist buddy and he milled and beveled the bore to fit the intake throat perfectly.. If you buy a Redline, you should expect to have the bore milled a little bit to get a perfect matchup with the intake.
  12. Here's a link to a pdf EA81 engine manual. Covers everything you need for a rebuild.. Takes a few minutes to download the zip file, then opens as a pdf that you can print or save.. http://www.ch601.org/engines/files/SubaruEA81-ServiceManual.zip
  13. I had the valve cover off on the #1 side and the head off on the opposite side. When the piston opposite was at TDC, I checked to make sure that both valves on the #1 cylinder were closed. I installed the distributor with the rotor facing the #1 position. I have both heads off right now and brought them to a machine shop to get the exhaust stud threads drilled and tapped and to have a pretture test done before I slap them back on.. Thanks...
  14. I'm putting my EA71 back together. I have an electronic disty off of an EA81. I need to know how to stab it in there where the gears are lined up properly. Another words, what cylinder should be TDC and stuff like that. Anyone have a quick procedure?
  15. Mine has a $25 exhaust... $9 per muffler plus tax.. Talk about sound SWEET!!!
  16. There used to be a guy down here who kept quality rebuilt soob carbs for the mudboat crowd in stock and sold them for $175 plus trade. Couldn't beat it.. But since his carb shop took in 12' of water during Katrina, he hung it up. Google is your friend... I did a quickie search and here's what I found: Basic home rebuild kit on ebay - $17 plus shipping. Rebuilt Hitachi DPC-306 FCproducts.com - $229 plus core deposit Carbexchange.com - $269 plus core deposit Importcarbs.com - $219 plus core deposit... New Weber 32/36 kit with adapter - $400 from several sources.. There's also a Holly kit out there somewhere, but I didn't bother searching for it.. Sometimes the quickie home rebuild kit is all you need to get another 20 - 30 thousand miles if it's not in too bad shape...
  17. Brilliant!! I've never thought of that before.. I will be trying that the next time I break a bolt or a stud off in something..
  18. My Hitachis swap directly from my EA81 to my EA71 manifolds. Exact same bolt pattern. Carter/Weber 1bbl has a different bolt pattern. I have a few of those laying around too. Never liked the C/W carbs. Rebuild kits can be difficult to locate, but Napa can get them. My recommendation: Measure the intake manifold from head to head and measure the bolt pattern. Check with Bratsrus and get him to send you another intake if the measurements match. He probably has one laying around. I bought some EA71 stuff off of him recently. Then contact me or another poster to get you a good Hitachi on there. I have a few in my shop, but they probably need a good cleaning and a carb kit. You can probably do a good swapover getting stuff from posters in here for under $50.. Add $30 for a carb kit and you're good to go.. I put 32/36 Webers on all of my engines when I have the scratch to dish out. I have 4 engines. 3 in boats (2 EA81 and 1 EA71), and another EA71 on the stand right now that's going in an ultralight air boat when it's back together. All of the intake bolt patterns are the same with the exception of the intakes for the Carter Webers, which are on my scrap pile.
  19. Leaky or failed valve seal (picks back up at higher RPMs), bent pushrod, valve adjustment, head gasket, rings,.. a number of things.. I have a dead bank with my EA81 at idle, but it kicks in above 1500 rpms. A local mechanic seems to think I need a valve job...
  20. I kind of like the color scheme and lines on this die-cast model. But I like blue anyway.....
  21. An aggressive tread off-road tire will hum loudly on the highway. I have 32" super swampers on my Samurai. The radio is worthless at speeds over 40 mph.. Does the hum seem to be in quadraphonic stereo like it's coming from all around? If so then it's probably the tires. If the hum appears isolated to a particular tire, I'd go with a wheel bearing or balancing problem. With aggressive off-road tires, balancing is a problem quite often. You may want to look into dynamic tire balancing.. (don't laugh.. I used a commercial version of this in my tires and it works great... http://www.4x4trailhunters.com/article.php?id=18
  22. I like the fact that he ran the coolant through the frame instead of using hoses.. Brilliant!!
  23. Our boats are quite common down here. There is a builder who makes them and installs either EA71 (slim and fat case), EA81 or EA82 engines. Last time I was at his shop he kept roughly 40 - 50 JDM and other used engines in stock. A custom made boat with a soob engine sells for around $14K new.. That's with all the bells and whistles like marine gear, hydraulic steering trolling motor, etc.. My boat is pretty basic.. A "meat boat" with a straight drive (no trans.. start it and go).. EA81 with Weber 32/36.. As far as stability, they don't tip over or capsize easily. The biggest problem is overloading. You can carry 2 people with guns and gear as well as 2 deer, but that's pushing it. Not much freeboard with that much weight. Everybody sinks their boats at one time or another. Mine has yet to go under, but my hull has a wider bottom and is foam filled. They are made for power with the soobs. They'll go through thick vegetation and soft mud like it's not there. Top speed in one to two foot of water varies from boat to boat. Most will run 35 - 50 mph depending on gearing and weight. Mine runs 47 mph by gps with a straight drive..
  24. Thanks again guys... I ordered the OEM set from thepartsbin.com.. $75 to the whole engine set and free shipping.. By the way, this engine will be going in an ultralight airboat..
  25. Great!! Thanks man.... Oh, who has the best price for an engine gasket set with decent gaskets?
