4wd button wont stay engaged '89 ea82

Featured Replies

on my 89 gl wagon, it is auto and has the s/r push button 4WD. If i push it in, the lights on the dash come on, and all indications are that 4WD is engaged, but the button will not "click" and stay engaged. has anyone dealt w/ this? could it be a grimy, cruddy switch causing it not to go in far enough to "lock" on? or a faulty switch? i will probably pull it apart this weekend and see what is up, but it would help to go in with some foresight. thanks!

Could be cruddy or broken. My guess is it is broken. Hope I am wrong!!!

just gotta find some time to get my a** down to harry's then..

The one in my old XT was sticky and didnt click. I just cleaned all the grime off the switch (amazed to find it was orange not black) and gave it a shot of silicone lubricant spray. Worked the button a few times and it worked great - apologies if the switch you're referring to is a different design to that in an XT.
