Just bought my first subaru and it's a 1983 DL station wagon, 4WD. The driver's side front CV is totally shot and i need to replace it. What size socket do i need to get that big bolt off (the one you can see with the wheel on). I realize that this is a common problem and i apologize if this is answered somewhere else but i couldn't find the answer anywhere.

36mm. You will also need either a puller or large brass hammer to unseat the axle from the hub. They usually fight to the very end.

It is also recommended that you replace the bearings at the same time.

Do a search for "Axle Replacement" this has been covered weekly on here for years....
