1994 Impreza 1.8 Help

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a check engine light on, and cannot find a code reader to save my life. Any suggestions?

Is there any way to reset it?

Hello, and welcome to the board. Sorry that you've got a problem though.

Is your car showing any other symptoms, besides a CEL? In other words, is it running badly? If not, you can disconnect the negative battery terminal for a few minutes, press the brake pedal to discharge the system completely, then reconnect. The CEL should go away. If the light comes back, then check the codes.

On the other hand, if it's running badly, you can check the codes yourself, without a code reader. It involves connecting certain wires and counting the flashes of the CEL. There are some good instruction on how do to this on this site:

http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/subaru.html Click on Notes & Tips, then on Engine Related.

Theses instructions are for a Legacy, but the procedure should be the same for your Impreza. If you have a service manual, there should be a trouble code table in it. If not, report back to us here with the code, and someone will be happy to look it up for you.

If it isnt running bad, its usually just a airleak, usually caused from a old gas cap.

The only other noticable symptom is that the car coughs and splutters when it's cold. Other than that, it runs fine.

Ok, it worked great. I got error codes 21 (Water temp sensor according to the Legacy site) and 34 (Not on the legacy list)

So.....my next questions are:

1) How hard is it to swap out the water sensor? (Try not to get too technical, I know more about puters than cars)

2) What's code 34?

I'm positive. I counted 3 times, just to make sure. I found a codes list somewhere and it said that 34 was something to do with the EGR valve?
