Seat belt light....

Featured Replies

Back in the day when our subaru was 8 years old(93 legacy wagon) everytime you would turn on the car and you wouldn't where a seat belt a little light would be on. WHen the car was about 10-11 years old it stopped working. Now the car is 13 years old and all the dash lights were changed, and every light seems to work, except that seatbelt light. IS that a bad thing? Is this a wiring issue? Will my airbag works? And the airbag light comes on then turns off. Any ideas, thanks guys!

under the front seats are a wiring harness that i believe is for the seat belts.you could try looking to see if they are disconnected or maybe corrosion..maybe?

there is some black box (seat belt timer) that controls the belt warning. There is a switch in the buckle, and a sensor built into the seat.

I just looked at the mother of all wiring diagramsThey als interact with the drivers door switch. The circuit is simple. The wiring diagram i uses is for a slightly newer soobie, but soobies dont change much.

It also controls the key buzzer. is that working?

When the door is open it chimes with the key in, but should it beep with the door shut and the seat belt off? Im going to check the wiring tommorow, and do u think it is important.

The seat belt control unit is on the driver's side of the car, mounted to the strut tower in the rear. For wagons, you'll have to remove the speaker (Might have to remove the whole side trim for the cargo area, but IIRC it's under teh speaker) and for sedal models, you'll have to remove the rear seat back, which is not too difficult. You *might* be able to get at it from inside the trunk but I'm not sure. It's a black box with a connector on it, will probably say "timer unit" or "Seat belt timer" or something to that effect on it. If that's unplugged, the auto belts won't work and the light won't come on, however it could be cooked and just not making the light come on.

Ok thanks for your help guys, but do you think its important if its not working? Does it control the air bag, the sensors, etc?

completely separate animals...(i'd assume)

The seatbelt buzzer should only go off if you disconnect the shoulder belt from the latch. It won't buzz for the lap belt.
The Seatbelt buzzer also goes off when you turn the car to the on position if you don't have the lapbelt plugged in. If you do, there won't be a buzz, but the seatbelt light will still flash.

Depending upon how anal your saftey inspection is you dont need it. If they are really PITA you do.
