Do salvage yards honestly state mileage?

Featured Replies

how do i choose which MT to put in my 96 OBW?

1. $500, unknown mileage, 4 month warranty.

2. $550, 73,000 miles claimed, no warranty.

3. $600, 127,000 miles claimed, 1 month warranty.

etc..........

some people lie, some dont. If you are close to the yard check and see if you can find one still in car and get it, if mileage suits you.

5 Spd Manual transmission from a 94 Subaru impreza. Unknow Milage.

Must sell trying to make room in my garage.

$100 Obo

  • this is in or around Denver
  • no -- it's NOT ok to contact this

Or get my Trans Kit from the Turbo Legacy, Listed on the USMB $100 and about 200 to ship.

regardless of the lenght of the warranty, not many places will pay labor to replace a bad part. so it is always a gamble.

1 month just means they garrantee it to work. no DOA.

4 months ... if that is the standard policy they just want to be better than the other guy. if it's a special offer, my guess is it's an enticement to move a trans thats been on the lot a while. seems to me that the longer it sits the cheaper it gets.

lots of places will work with you to find one that works if you have a problem. but you need to have some confidence in who you deal with.

besides, if they cheat you ... just post it here. we won't buy any more.

I discovered something interesting when I bought a used EJ22 motor...Subaru put the VIN on it, so I was able to run a Carfax on the motor to see what the last recorded mileage was! I wonder if Subaru VIN identifies transmissions as well?

i sold a 99 obw a/t that not only had a lable on the top of the belhousing with model number, but on the driver side midpoint ther was a label wit hte vin. and while loading and shipping the side lable came off and underneath, the vin was etched in to the housing. i haven't looked for this on any other years.

A number of salvage yards around here get most of thier cars from being abandoned. They have no idea and often no paperwork.

At least with a wrecked car they have a title and sometimes a little clue.

The pick and pull yards around here you can see the milage on the car youre taking it from and they only charge $75 for the trans and $140 for a complete motor. The only bad thing is there is only about 20 subarus to choose from.

Yep, if you are pulling it yourself you can also see if it looks replaced. A warranty is best as you never really know what is inside a salvage yard piece. I have replaced a tranny with one just as bad before even though it looked great on the out side. It's a lot of work to do twice.
