I have a friend with a 92 legacy. her transmission only goes into 2nd. So I am going to replace it for her. I'm going to get a junkyard or craigslist (or something of the sort) transmission. Is there anything different about the old legacys? is it a hard job? Is there anything I need to look for specificly?

5MT or automatic? If it's a 5MT, it may be that the shift fork is broken or something light like that, not an entire transmission. Usually if 2nd goes, 1st goes too so...

and 2nd is the only gear it will go into. I'm thinking syncros or something. I haven't driven the car so I dunno.

Migght be good if u drive the car. But would clutches cause this? Whats the mieage?

a clutch can do weird things. Can you go through the gears with car off and the clutch depressed? Can you start the car in gear (clutch depressed) then try shifting. Get under the car nad make sure the linkage is good. Also IF your going to chenage the tranny (i dont think its the tranny) might as well replace the clutch. This is not a standard failure mode for any manual tranny unless something is broken inside, and even then you would still have 3-4 5-R. Does it go from 2nd to neutral or is it just stuck in 2nd?

 

Check the linkage.
