Brake noise(99 Imp O/B sport)

Featured Replies

Guys,

Still learning about my soob as always...Yesterday I had to stomp on the brakes HARD, otherwise the jerk who pulled out in front of me at 65mph would not be able to walk today due to me slamming into him....however I avoided the incident thanks to the quick acting brakes and great handling of my Outback sport. But here's the problem since that took place I have a grinding noise from my front right tire area. I think its the brakes...It does it when I am at low speeds(5-10mph) but when I hit the brakes its usually goes away and then again sometimes it doesn't...Any advice would be great.

Can you pull the tire off and get a look. You may have some scoring on the rotor.

You probably need break pads, when was the last time they were done?

replace the pads, and get new rotors. You can machine the rotors, but 90% of the time your better off with new ones (not all that expensive). Also check the sliders on the calipers to make sure they are free.

Get yourself a haynes manual and that will cover it, its not really all that hard to do.

ANY CERTAIN PLACE THATS IS BEST TO GET THE KIT?

Get the rotors at Pepboys, 20 bucks a pop. The pads at peps should be around 40 bucks. Get a can of MR. Wrench Silicone spray to clean the metal brake clips, if they are bent go to the dealer to get new one's. You will probally need a breaker bar to get the calipar mounting bolts off, use some liquid wrench. Side note, be carefull taking those bolts off, if this is the first time the rotors have been changes they will be froxen on and you do not want to break head of the bolt off like I did. My sub was out for a week and it cost me 90 bucks for that braket. If you have those bolts off and they are rusted to the nine's replace them for 3 bucks a pop you will need 4. That is a dealer item.

The best pads for the money is the dura last from Auto Zone, arond 20.00 dollars.they now come with the shim rivereted on to back, they used to be just glued. My Legacy is used for mail del. over 600 stops a day with a loaded car and the pads are better then the O.E.M. and I should know because I was forced to use the O.E.M. for nearly two years due to the pad design change from the 96 model to the 97, and at that time they were no aftermarket pads to be had due to the design change. These are much better then any of the many other pads I have tried.
