Lagacy diff, 4.44?

Featured Replies

Will a 4.44 crown wheel fit in a 91 Lagacy 3.9 rear diff? Is there anything else needed to fit it?

Thanks.

What are you trying to do? Most gear sets (ring and pinion) are matched sets, they need to be replaced together. Why are you looking for a 4.44 rear diff, are you installing a 4.44 ratio tranny? The tranny and rear diff need to match. (I'm assuming by "crown wheel" you are talking about the ring gear)

Yeah, I mean ring gear/crown wheel. So if I got a 4.44 ratio ring gear and pinion it would fit into the 3.9 ratio diff casing? Also would I be able to fit a 4.44 set in the front of a gen 1 Lagacy box? (I actually have a D/R Liberty box, but I am assuming for now they are the same)

I don't think it will work, all of the 4.44 ratio rear diff I know of are in R180 diffd, I believe your old Leg has an R160 diff. As for the tranny, the 4.44 ratio trannies are in Imprezas, but I'm not sure if they are the same as your Liberty/Legacy tranny. The pinion gear in the tranny is an important part of the tranny, and requires taking the tranny completely apart to change it. I'm not sure if the D/R tranny would have the same type of pinion gear as the Impreza trannies.

Ahh, right I see. What about the 4.11's? I've seem a few people put those in the old RX's FT4WD trans.

That was my first thought on reading this thread.

Legacy/Liberty came with a 4.11 rear diff, if you could find one with a manual tranny, thne you would have all you need, that is assuming that the Legacy/Liberty D/R portion of the tranny does not effect that pinion gear.

Take a look at Forester part numbers. They had R160s and 4.44 final drives with the 5speeds. I don't know if ALL years had 4.44:1 or not. It shouldn't be too tough to find out though.

This is a pretty popular swap for WRX guys wanting extra grunt....

i few have tried to fit 4.44 in the front.4.11 seem to fit ok as in pinion angles,4.44 it don't match.i know someone who has built a 4.11 awd dual range box,but its hasn't been fitted.also spoke to aguy that said he got 4.44 to work but required a whole lot of machining.the rears just get amatching diff i've just fitted a4.44 vlsd with the female shafts in a 88 wagon one of the easiest jobs i've done.

interesting. I think I will have to just go with the 4.11's. I just kinda wanted to do something different. But I don't want to find after buying a diff that I have to do more machining then my workshop can handle..
