Distributor questions EA82T

Featured Replies

Ok, how does one bench test a distributor module on a 89 EA82T? Also, would an XT6 distributor work on an EA82T, with a different cap of course...

Thanks

You really can't - it's an optical crank angle sensor. Generally unless the shaft bushings have play in them, it either works or it doesn't.

All fuel injected EA82's use the exact same distributor. They may have different plugs but they are all the same. SPFI, MPFI, and Turbo are all identical units. Some have screw-on caps and some clip-on, but again - only cosmetic. If you swap the right harness or plug any of them will work.

XT6 is of course the ER27, and would have a 6 cylinder distributor with 6 points on the cap. This will not work.

Not entirely true. 85-86 Turbo distys (maybe MPFIs too) have vac advances, and a magnetic pickup, not the optical pickup with computer controlled advance.

Oh yeah - I should qualify that statement a little more - all Hotwire MAF fuel injection distributors are the same. Including the 86 SPFI. Just don't grab anything that has a vac can on the side and you'll be ok.

frank,

twice i've had distributors test within spec's of the FSM and they were still bad. spent hours trouble shooting (you could probably find my threads here or http://www.xt6.net) and in the end both times it was distributor related. i don't know how, i still haven't taken them apart but they were both on vehicles that i did extensive engine work on and the disty sat for awhile. whether that down time caused corrosion or what i don't know but i've never had one fail in a running vehicle. both times they worked fine, car ran fine, took it down for a few weeks/months for engine work and they didn't work when reinstalled. but they tested fine, go figure.
