December 17, 200619 yr Well, nipper and porcupine73 were right (thanks folks ); our 98 Legacy has much play in the front u-joint. I know Subaru will gladly $ell a new shaft. I'm trying to find a shop that could replace the UJ-what do I need? Failing that, I see many guys getting used ones. Can you give me an idea what models/years might interchange? Much obliged!

Much obliged! at the very least, any legacy 95 - 99 with the same tranmision will be a perfect fit. it is posible, not likely, that the other tranny will fit. it is highly likely that the same tranny , 90 - 99+ will fit. try searching a/t vs. m/t for all years in question at 1stsubaruparts.com . i may have one if you have an a/t. john
December 17, 200619 yr Another option is to find a drive shaft shop and have them rebuil dtour for less then 200.00 (125 last time i had it done). They fit it with a uni from a ford ranger i think. It has a grease fitting so you dont have to worry about it failing again. nipper
