hey guys

The oil pump o-ring on the 96 2.5 legacy

I have the engine overhaul gasket set

There is one o-ring that looks close to the correct size but seems a little small in the diameter (does not look like the proper fit)

 

Then, there are 4 identical o-rings that look like they fit much better

but 2 things...why 4? and it is not true o-ring...it sort of has a small molded lip in the ID

Can anyone tell me with certainty what is what???

The one with 4...3 go inside the block and the one is for the oil pump like you are guessing.

I put a little thin grease on that o-ring to hold it centered while I bolted the pump down. The other 4 fit much better, but don't use them.

Oh...one other thing I forgot to ask about this....the old o-ring definitely had some anerobic sealant on it.....is it recommended...advised...or not?

I can't see how a little sealant or as mentioned grease on it to hold it in place while the pump is fitted is going to hurt. The biggest problem I had was yes the o-ring is a little loose in the groove. On the first attempt it fell out and I didn't notice it. Fortunately I pulled the pump off to double check and saw it. A bit of grease or something to hold it in place would help.

So one guy says use one of the 4 supplied O-rings and someone else says "don't" use them......

anyone else have any confirmation from a dealer which is correct???

Do they happen to have a part number on them or is it just a big bag of parts? The o-ring I used was 10991AA001 but this was on an '00.

I believe a 1996 engine needs the older part number which is indeed the same as for the rings sealing oil passages between the block halves.

Well...went to stealer...he pulled an o-ring out of a larger package (individual o-ring was not in it's own bag.....it has a purplish color to it...seems to be the same diameter as the 4 funky looking -rongs that came with my engine gasket set....p/n is 806919050...?

so....i figured I'd buy it to be safe...friggin thing was 6.61 with tax....crooks

I still don't understand why the 4 o-rings in my set were not 0-rings in the true sense of the term (a had sort of molded lip on the ID)

i think the term o-ring referrs to the circular shape not the cross section .

you may be right...but I always thought an 0-ring was circular in cross section ...anything else would be a "gasket" ....I have worked for a rubber company for 25 years

Good question. Parker defines an o-ring as "a torus; a circle of material with round cross section which effects a seal through squeeze and pressure."

 

I'm kind of fascinated by o-rings; they're sort of mysterious.

The "O" refers to the cross-section. There are also square rings, D-rings and other kinds. Recently I came across a quad ring, whose cross-section is like a square with concave sides.

The number is correct and yes they're crooks because even the list price is around $2. The lip is just the mold line, they had to put it somewhere.

No....I know a mold parting line (I'm in the rubber business)....this is a molded lip of sorts on the OD of the o-ring

If I had access to a digi camera I would cut the o-ring and ake a close up and post it...maybe during the upcominig week

I'm sure you know better. I thought it had something to do with the mfg. process because the lip does not come in contact with anything.
