December 26, 200619 yr ok have a 1988 subaru gl-10 turbo wagon,its an auto with a 1 hold buttin on the center console right below the shifter,i was pretty sure it was a 4eat but the salvage yard keeps sending me the wrong tranny totaly differant frome mine, can some one help me determin what type of tranny i have ?
December 26, 200619 yr Does the car say "Full Time 4WD Turbo" on the side? If not, it's a typical 3AT. Only the FT4WD's were 4EAT's (or some manual's). You should just convert it to a manual anyway. Easy, and much more reliable, and better performing. GD
December 26, 200619 yr Author nah full time awd so it is a 4eat sweet i was right. ne ways what would i need to swap in a 5 spd and what should i get it out of? thats what i wanted to do anyways.
December 26, 200619 yr Flywheel/Clutch Tranny (85 to 89 if you want a D/R) Tranny cross-member and mounts Front section of the driveline (rear section is the same) Linkage/console Pedal assembly/clutch cable Rear diff if it's not already 3.9 Possibly the front axles if they aren't already 23 spline. If they are 25 spline then they won't fit the N/A tranny. They will fit a turbo 5 speed, but not the typical D/R. If you are already swapping out a bad tranny, then it's really only a couple extra hours to do the full 5 speed swap. It's completely a bolt up, with the only change being you have to jumper two pins on the automatic shifter plug to disable the park switch that prevents the starter from engaging. GD

GD You should have the 3.7 final drive so fi you get a turbo 5-speed, then you'll be set on that area. Also, the axles will be a 25 spline as well so if you decide to get a 5-speed from a NA car, then you'll need to convert the axles to a 23 spline DOJ. On your 4EAT, since it is an electronic tranny, you'll have to figure out a way to start the carunless you have more success getting the two wires that are for the neutral safety switch on the tranny, to close. I did the same exact swap on my '89 RX (4EAT -> FT4WD 5-speed d/r) and I figured out which wires needed to be conencted for that but for some reason, it never worked! So I hooked up a pushbutton instead on the dash, only gets power when the key is in the "START" position and started the car very nicely. Other then that, GD summed it up pretty good. One thing on the clutch setup though, you'll want to get a clutch kit for a turbo car or for an XT6 and have a stock turbo flywheel machined to an XT6 spec (slightly bigger and better clutch over the stock turbo clutch).
