December 30, 200619 yr Thought it was a noise from the heater core, but i tried all settings including off, and it still makes the knocking noise, its not a steady noise, its very inconsistent. one time is was VERY audible, i mean i can have the radio turned up and i can hear it. What can cause this, the car drive, well, lets just say the engine, and the rest of the drivetrain is solid, minus my transmission, that i spent $3000 on, to let a bunch of newbs fix, and screw me, tonight or tommorow ill do a test. Ill listen under the hood while my dad revs the engine, seems to do it, as the rpms drop in 1,2,3,D,N,P, after driving over 80KM/h. Just want to fix this, and not expierence sudden failure. December 30, 200619 yr You might want to give the flexplate a check. I've seen some vehicles where the flexplate will make a knocking noise, not consistent really and people think its the engine. So if theres something wrong with the flexplate that wasn't caught when the said newbs rebuilt your tranny, then I'd get it checked out, pronto!
December 30, 200619 yr Author LOL, these guys said the torque converter kept cracking, and they replaced it 4 times, then they replaced the TCU, and they claim it fixed the problem, guess it didnt eh? Isn't something suppost to be torqued to the correct ft-lb's? might i add, i don't feel any difference in performance, or do i ? Doesn't seem to be working perfectly, but my dad thinks this is how the car felt when it was new, i think he is loosing his head, i remember when i was young, and that is NOT how the car felt.
December 30, 200619 yr The TC breaks when it's not seated correctly on top of the tranny. I bet your flexplate is cracked like was mentioned above.
December 30, 200619 yr Author Ok, well i talked to my dad, and were going to see what we can do, my dads truck got into a accident, so we can't drop off the subaru at the tranny shop and let them look at it. Once my dad gets his truck, were going to see if the tranny shop can fix things CORRECTLY, including the AWD unit, if not, they better refund 80% of the 3000 or we will see them at small claims court.
December 30, 200619 yr Check to see if they put the dowels or should i say left the dowel in the engine that postion the trany on the engine ( See attached for location) Alot of times shops swap a trany and they don't realize they are stuck on the old trany bell housing If they are not put in the trany will not centre on the engine and put stress on the flex plate, causing it to crack Hope this helps SEA#3

December 31, 200619 yr Author Hey guys, well the knocking is getting louder and louder, and when it knocks, i throw it in neutral, and it goes away. The car is going to be the main car for a while, and im wondering, if there may be sudden failure? Doesn't seem to be slipping the torque converter, no performanc lost from what i can tell. But any thing i should look into, until i can bring in the car(still got 12,000KM of warrenty:lol:)
December 31, 200619 yr The flex plate can complete fail. WHat your hearing is a crack in the flex plate. As with any metal, the more it bends, the weaker it gets and the bigger the crack. Another possability is that it is an internal bushing inside the torque converter. Take it back sooner then later. nipper
