'96 Outback - intermittently won't start

96 Outback w/ DOHC 2.5L sometimes doesn't start....try several times with no joy....let it sit for a while....come back later starts right up.

We could use a bit more info. What exactly does "doesn't start" mean? Does it crank? If it cranks, does it fire at all, but won't actually run? Is the problem occurring when the engine is hot, cold, or temp doesn't seem to matter?
