Cracked Block?.....

Featured Replies

OK this is probably a stupid question but Im throwing it out there in hopes of an alternative.. 98 outback with a rebuilt 2.5 ---Antifreeze dripping out of a leak in the exhaust, rear of the reasonator or whatever that is..

Could this be anything other than a cracked head leaking through to the exhaust manifold? Its been like this for 3 weeks now, since I noticed, and everything seems okay. I havent had to add any coolant yet either..

Any thoughts would be apprciated, thanks.

I hope it's just condensation. Look at your holding tank and tell us what you see.

have you verified that it's coolant and not unburned gas, condensation or something else? sounds like it may just be normal. is it still there once it's warm?

if the engine was rebuilt that means new intake manifold gaskets were installed. i can't recall the EJ set up from memory but on the older soobs these have coolant passages in them that are known to leak on occassion and may have not seated well when the new engine was installed.

You can verify coolant by holding your hand over the tailpipe until it's wet, then smelling it. If it smells like antifreeze, UH OH! I'm guessing it'll smell like exhaust, My Leg spews water out the pipe even warmed up, it's not coolant tho, it's just condensation of hot air going thru cold pipes. I've never seen one that spews condensation like my Leg, but it seems like it doesn't mind.

The holding tank looks fine. the levels ok and the color is normal

I noticed the leak in the driveway after it had snowed and the snow was greenish yellow , thanks for replying

If it is a real leak the level will go down. If it is condensation you will get a colored drip out the rear becuse the water takes on color from the grubbey exhaust system.

keep an eye on the coolant level in the overflow and radiator and also your temp gauge. they will be your friends for the next couple weeks.

Thanks for the replies

I have been checking the levels in the radiator also(no change)

And watching the temp gauge diligently, which I have been since I blew a head gasket and severly overheated my previous engine.....

Whichs leads me to this thought could there possibly be residual antifreeze int my cat. converter? Slowly working its way out as condinsation goes by?

A lot of the time the drips are just water , no green , but other times they are antifreeze. Im trying to keep a possitive outlook. Oh yeah, the blown head gasket was 6000 miles ago.

Sad to say it but I don't think residue would last that long passing through the cat. When we replaced my engine from burnt valve it smoked like crazy for about an hour as the oil inside the exhaust burned off,but nothing since. I'm no expert though. John
