2005 3.0 HO Outback Questions

Featured Replies

Looking at buying another Subaru (2005 3.0L HO Outback Sedan) with 11,000 miles on it. Clean Carfax on the vehicle. Got them down to $21,000. Anything I should be aware of on the 3.0 HOL (I'm aware of the premuim fuel). I'm a 1998 2.2L Legacy owner today and it's been a great car. Thanks In Advance.....

Keep an ear out for the automatic chain tensioner (yes it has a timing chain). There has been some problems with these, but subaru has a fix.

Beleive it or not there are over (are you sitting down) 100 bolts to get to the timing chain. So this is not something you wnat to do yourself. On the bright side the chain is supposed to last the life of the car (which i am assuming to be 200K)

Nothing lasts for ever.

The chain tensioner issues have been pretty limited to early-on H6's - 2001 mostly.

You can run regular or mid-grade - Subaru just "Recommends" Premium. I use mid-grade (89) pretty often, or Regular, but never Premium, which is 93 around here.

The local dealer said not to run synthetic oil in a VVT engine but SOA says they don't care. I've been using Mobil I since the first oil change.

Cool wasnt sure when the tensioners were fixed. I think the local dealer wants the business of oil changes :)
