Looking at EA82 -> EJ22 swap, some questions (AC, standalone)

The Loyale is a bit short on power, and the local junkyard has a 1995 EJ22 lounging around. Gears start turning...

 

I've looked over the PDF of the swap directions, and it looks fairly reasonable, but I still have a few questions.

 

1. This is my year round people/stuff hauler. I'm a BIG fan of the AC. How do I go about keeping the AC with the EJ22 swap? If I can do it without breaking the system open (using the EA compressor), I'd like to do that - I like my R12. I haven't seen much on this discussed, it seems most people just pull the AC out.

 

2. If I do keep the AC, how do I feed timing data to the Megasquirt? The normal Ford pickup seems to go where the AC belt runs.

 

3. How much difference in power is there between the Legacy ECU (with a cammed EJ22) and a well tuned Megasquirt?

I'm not sure about the compressors. but I know there were at least 2 different compressor types on both engines. so that'll depend. but, unfortunately, I doubt it would work.

 

why Megasquirt? there are dozens of standalone options for the EJ motors, none of which involve any messing with sending units or anything. there are whole sections on it on nasioc, rs25, etc.

 

IMHO, stock ECU with a piggyback (like the Perfect Power) is the best option unless you're going for 400awhp or more. There's a guy on Nasioc who's pushing 22psi through an open deck EJ22e block with ej22t crank and pistons, DOHC heads and intake mani, and stock EJ22e ECU and a perfect power. getting about 300awhp, and even more torque.

Would it be possible to use the EJ compressor with the EA system, then? I need to maintain AC for this car - Iowa summers are too hot for my ferrets without AC.

Interesting. I'm going for about 180-190hp, so the stock ECU should be able to handle that? Can I use a SAFC-II on the EJ motors? I've used one on my RX-7, so I'm familiar with it, but I didn't even think about it, since the EAs have a 10v sending unit for airflow & don't play nice with the SAFCs.

Yes it can be done.I have seen a ej converted ea82 with working a/c.it was done by using the ej compressor and fitting the ej ends onto the ea hoses[ground off ea ones and ej ones recrimped done by a hydraulic hose specialist]The ea wiring was used to fire the system up it didn't have idle up control but this was accomplissed by using the cruise actuator.A mate has seen the ea compressor grafted onto a ej motor but it requires custom mounting brackets.

yes, but nonetheless proves that a perfect power added onto a stock OBDI ECU can put in enough fuel for 22psi.

 

 

good catch dave! yep, your '95 will be an OBDII which opens up a whole new can of worms wiring wise. a pre-1994 legacy is a much better donor.

IMHO 180-190 hp (even at the crank) is alot to ask from a N/A setup.

Remember you'll be using the ej wiring and maf sensor, it is 12v and i've seen people using an Safc with them
