March 6, 200719 yr I am just going through my head wondering how much of a *************** its gonna be to put a ej22t into my 1990 legacy wagon. I know legacy777 has done it so maybe he knows, but I need a list off all the things needed for the swap. A lot of work I know, but It seems like you need a lot of random things that I have no idea about. I know i need all the censors and wiring and crap that goes with the engine. But will i need to make a custom drive shaft because of the different transmission? I just need to know basically everything about the engine swap and all the parts to see how much its gonna be, and if I can even do it. I really want to turn my wagon into a beast, but it seems like it gonna cost a LOT!!!! Considering I can't do it. Don't know enough about cars nor do I have a garage or shop I can do it in. So I really need to know what all goes into the swap so I can see if and when I will be able to do it. thanks a lot.
March 6, 200719 yr I'd say try over on Legacy Central. Some of those guys have done it and have documented success.
March 6, 200719 yr It's an easy swap. Josh did it without any major hitches. It doesn't require extra fabbing, just parts and electronics...and even then, most of the time it's just doing some wires for the Turbo ECU.
March 6, 200719 yr just the engine will bolt to your existing trans and engine mounts so nothing custom there. to run factory subaru turbo piping you will need to get a turbo crossmember as it has a special clearance area. you can use the stock wiring harness but you have to add 5 or so wires for the boost control stuff to the ecu, and switch the cam and crank sensor wires around.its pretty easy as subaru engine swaps go but any engine swap is not for the uninitiated.
March 6, 200719 yr well, wiring it up to work on the stock ECU is pretty easy, just have to move a few wires, the plugs are the same on the ECU, just a few wires are different. I've uploaded a full ECU pinout that covers both turbo and N/A models.... BUT, if you're planning on pushing enough power to justify going closed deck, it'd be just plain dumb to run the stock ECU. get a standalone and wire it in there. and if you're running a standalone, you might as well upgrade the heads..... the open deck motor can take a ton of power (like 300awhp or more) with a piggy back and lower CR pistons. your options are endless and IMHO the 22t is very overrated (and overpriced....)

I say it's overrated...not junk. it's definitely a sweet motor. but the 22e can take 300+, and are a dime a dozen by comparison. reddevil is living proof of that. probably seeing close to 350 awhp. and keeps blowing up 22t pistons because he beats the crap out of it. the cylinder walls are not the weak point.
March 8, 200719 yr Author So we went out to the legacy today and started ripping parts off. I looked at the rear differential and there wasn't a sticker saying what kind of ratio it has. So does anybody know what a 1996 legacy wagon brighton edition has for a rear differential ratio? There was a star on the rear differential though. Like in the metal not a sticker. Thanks

March 9, 200719 yr The manual "should" have 4.11's my 95 brighton did. Auto "should" be 3.90 I noticed on mom's 98 today that it also didn't have a sticker and I was wondering about it myself. At least its not alone
