ECS warning light in 86 gl10 wagon

Featured Replies

So Im cruising up to Snoqualmie pass in my 86 gl10 at about 70, when the ECS light come on, then off, then on again. It stayed off until I got to the exit, then came on again for maybe half a minute. The temp was almost in the red, but thats normal for this car (more on that later).

I rode the mountain for a few hours, then on the way home, about halfway from the top, to seattle, it came on again until I got the Bellevue, then stayed off.

This was Tuesday night, and the light hasnt come on again, though all the driving I've done is around town.

Should I start worrying, or is this just another one of the electrical gremlins these cars are plagued with?

The other worrysome thing about this car is the temp guage goes up and down depending on if the fan, fog lights, or wipers are on or off.

Anyone else with a gl10 (ea82t) deal with this?

Load test your charging system, and check the drag of the cooling fan. I had this on my 87 and it was a bad altenator. Seems the temp gauge reacts opposite of the voltage. Bad bearings in the cooling fan can draw alot of current.

Check your grounds and cables too.

Pull the panel off that is above your knees when driving

Look up and find the gold/silver box -- the ECU

small round "window" is the LED for the 02 monitor

this is where the codes are read.

follow these instructions

for reading a stored code.

ECU Codes from the USRM

Hope this helps.
