Anyone have a clue why. I haven't seen the car. It's a friends and he told me that he can't get it into 1st. All other gears work. I forgot to ask if he could get it in gear when the car isn't running. Thanks for you time.

How old is the clutch? Maybe its time for a cable adjustment?

 

Check the linkage bushings.

 

Try starting off from first with the engine off.

try shifting into reverse first and then into first gear, it works the other way around if reverse doesn't work like mine

It also helps to shift into reverse, and feather the clutch a little, THEN try getting into 1st
