Post motor swap exhaust question

Recommended Posts

Hi, I dropped an ea81 out of an 84 dl wagon into my 82 Brat. The motor that came out had 1 of the air suction valves setups on the passengers side only. The motor from the 84 has 1 on each side. Now I can't seem to get the exhaust header to seal properly against the head on the passengers side and the exhaust is rattling against the frame at the end of the y pipe. Do I need both air suction valves or can I remove the 1 on the drivers side of the motor and if I do will that help the exhaust seal and fit properly? Thanks in advance for any tips/help. Since your old engine had the ASV on just one side, the Y-pipe is also designed to work with just the one ASV. So when you tried to bolt up that Y-pipe up to the new engine, you'll probably have about a 1" gap on the passenger side. Now you could remove the ASV port on the drivers side, as you mentioned in your post, but it's a total PITA to do it with the engine sill in your Brat; unless you have a die grinder and an impact.

An other option is to find a Y-pipe from an 83 or later EA81 model. In 83 Subaru went to having 2 ASV on 2wd models and 1 ASV with a driver's side spacer on 4wd models. Then in 84 All EA81 models had 2 ASVs.

Or you could have a custom Y-pipe built.

Thanks for the quick response. I'd like to pull the one on the passenger side. At startup it stays open and is loud as %#$@ for about a minute then it closes and I can hear the exhaust leak at the manifold. Is it supposed to be like that? I have the y pipe from the donor car that I could use and go with both ASV's but if there's something wrong with the 1 I'd rather remove it and silence it. The driver's side doesn't make any noise whatsoever. I have the tools to do the PITA route and pull it but I'm not exactly sure how to get it off the head. If I cut and welded shut the pipe from it and used the y-pipe from the donor car would that silence it or can it be repaired if its got a problem? Sorry for being an uneducated subie person but most of my knowledge is from my old 1400 and 1600 motors. Thanks again for any help!!! I'm trying to get it ready for the run to WCSS! I would remove the one thats still on. If it overheats and melts the plastic, it gets sucked up into the carb and creates all kinds of problems.

Thanks for the help! I'll suit up and crawl under there and pray it doesn't start raining :dead: as soon as I get started. You guys ROCK!!!!! :headbang: :headbang: Frank
