EJ18 info - where? EGR? OBDxx?

Featured Replies

When is the last year the EJ18 was available, and what vehicle - impreza xxxxx? all the impreza's i've seen are EJ22.

Do all EJ18's have an EGR valve?

Are they all OBDI?

did a search and couldn't find much. seems like they are all OBDI.

I've personally seen one in a 97 brighton, it was obd2 and the egr was in the same spot as an ej22. I believe that 97 was the last year for the motor stateside.

you sure it was OBDII?

side note...how do you read codes on an OBDI vehicle? never done that, i've done the old school ECU's and the new OBDII.

It had the standardize scanner port. So I would assume with that, and subaru converted them all in 96.

For the obd1's there are a couple connectors that you plug in under the dash and it flashes the cel at you for the code sequence.

OBDII should be available in the '96 model year. My '97 has OBDII and an EJ22. Most early imprezas are EJ18 up to and including '95 I believe; my son has a '96 Impreza with original EJ22 engine. I have heard of one '96 Impreza with EJ18 engine.

EGR is capped off in my '97 Impreza.

Not sure, but '95 and earlier Imprezas should be OBDI.

looks like i have a 1995 EJ18. OBDI.

i'd much rather be able to read the codes myself, why are OBDII's desirable anyway. and yep, it has an EGR, but i figure i can get rid of that.

OK here is my dumb question...since I am really new to the EJ line...what is this OBDI and OBDII things??

On-board diagnostic systems. obd2 is standardized, and is more sensitive to whats going on with the motor and emissions system.

OBDII is the newer "standard", that's what allows you to take your car in and plug it into the computer to find out what codes are available or to do diagnostic stuff. like you go to advanced auto parts or autozone and they hook that little scanner up and tell you why your check engine light is on...or you pay the dealer $70 to do it, that's OBDII stuff.

not sure if one is more beneficial than another, i'll want to know though.

OBDI was not standardized for all makes and models; so your Subaru needs a Select Monitor to pull the codes off easily (or go through the count the flashing lights routine). Your dealer and some independant shops will have the Select Monitor. Both systems just record glitches in the system and if there are enough glitches turn on your Check Engine Light. The glitches are recorded to aid in diagnosing a problem.
