July 13, 200718 yr I'm having difficulty with my blower modes. Whatever I select on the mode control panel (heat, AC, defrost, bilevel) the air only comes out of the face level vent (not the floor or defrost vents). A friend said this might be a solenoid between the mode panel and whatever component makes those switches. My manual and wiring diagram shows the mode panel and an AC and blower relay, but no solenoid. Does anybody know what component controls the blower modes and whether there's a solenoid or relay between it and the control panel? Thanks, Jesse

Whatever I select on the mode control panel (heat, AC, defrost, bilevel) the air only comes out of the face level vent (not the floor or defrost vents). The buttons are valves, with some switch contacts also. The mosty common cause of what you describe is a disconnected vacuum line. There is a line from the buttons to a canister under the hood. Then from the canister to the intake manifold. The canister - fairly small- is on the passenger side between the spare tire and the strut tower.
July 13, 200718 yr I agree with DaveT, this is a air control problem and not electrical. The air vent may be stuck also.
July 13, 200718 yr Author Thanks, that's very helpful. I'll check the vacuum hose and other air delivery lines over the weekend. If it is a stuck vent, any hints on how to unstick it? I assume I'd pull the dash panelling and expose it that way... -JPD
July 13, 200718 yr Classic symtoms of disconnected vacuum line. Follow the lines out of the canister behind the strut tower. One line should be connected to the intake manifold, supplying the vaccum. the other runs over across the engine bay, and into the cab, through the rubber boot near windshield wiper motor. If all that looks good(and not crimped anywhere) then look inside, up under the dash. Sometimes(espescially with a Manual trans) that line can get caught by you're feet and pulled out. Try to find the line coming through the firewall(rubber), and makesure it is still connected to the line that feds the dash controls(skinny black plastic). It's a jumble of wire up there, but it isn't too hard to find.
