I kind of wondered what that screw might do. I wouldn't mind adjusting the shift points a little. Maybe it got turned all the way one way -> don't shift?

Is the old one so bad you can't do a quick test drive?

Are you aware of the little pin that goes into the modulator? It usually stays in the transmission, but nothing really holds it there...

Sounds like the pin for the modulator is missing, or you didnt check the fluid correctly after the modulator swap and its not at the correct fluid level.

I say ditch the automatic all together

take a look at the governor, the cup shaped thing on the passenger side of the transmission. take i t out an apart and clean it rather well. make sure the gear is not "apple cored"

also, ther eare 2 dipsticks on the transmisson, one foe ATF !! or !!! and one on the top for the front diff, which takes your regular gl-5 gear oil. the governor threads into the diff and is centrifugal activated realtive to rolling speed of the front drivetrain

there should be an article on the procedure, search usrm "governor shaft"

Exactly why I asked you to smell the automatic transmission fluid. If it smells like gear oil, the seal between the front differential and the transmission either seeps or blows. Usually happens when either oil (atf/gear oil) is ran really low, or previous modulator failure, resulting in the transmission being ran on low or no ATF at all for some time, which is no good of course
