Hi guys, i'm thinking about buying a 1989 j10. It has a transmission problem its not shifting up and its an ECVT. Any information on the car would be most welcome as this will be my first subaru.... but then again that may well depend on the reponses i get from you guys. As for the transmission is there an easy fix or does it need replacing.... i can put my hands on a used manual tranny....but then how difficult would the change be? I really like to little car and except for the tranny i don't think there is any other problems beside two rust spots that can still be treated. Put it this way it has only got 40000 km on the clock and by the look of the rest of the car it seems to be acurate.

The only bad things in these cars from what i hear are the ECVT and the oil pump. If you ever see a spare carb for it snag it. If its fuel injected never mind . Replace the oil pump as a maintanence item.

 

The fix for the tranny usually is to install a stick. The typical failure mode for the tranny is the car does not go. They use a weird magnetic powder clutch which is troublesome. The fact that your goes but doesnt shift is promising.

Thanks for the info i'll give it a try... i know where i can get two stick boxes so that may be the solution..

For the conversion, you'll need at least the gearbox, clutch, flywheel, cluthc/brake pedal assembly, clutch cable, tranny mount, And maybe axles(have no clue about the just axle design), maybe speedo cable(again justy illiterate), and a small bit of wiring changes to be made.
