U-joint Axles?

Ok, I looked and looked, and couldn't find any threads on this subject, but If I understand correctly, it should be possible to build spindles and a custom axle that you could fit with U-joints to replace the CV axles. I know that they make these for a Ford bronco, and a friend of mine switched because he was tired of the sage brush tearing appart his CV boots. I'm not really expecting any readymade axles like these, just wondering if anyone has done this here or knows of someone who has? The idea isn't that the u-joints are any stronger, just easier to replace and not being susceptable to a torn boot from brush ruining an axle.

The only problem I can see is with the front wheels. Subarus have a lot of steering, and I don't think a uni joint on a dropped down wheel with full lock would be happy..

Most trucks only have like 24-26 degree steering, Subies have 33degree to my understanding. So it would work better with less steering.

yep, the front outer CVs are pretty crucial...

 

 

but everything else could be done. but would require quite a bit of custom work.

if the shaft was a sliding yoke then yhat would work. on the subaru and specific to its suspension geometry the axle changes length through out its arc hence the DOJ joint to allow for this

Some years ago I bought Datsun 510 and z-car axles intending to mate them with R200 diffs, 930 CVs, and SVX or WRX hubs. What I found is that those u-joints do not allow much flex. There might be some potential combining the slipjoints with 930 CV's, but I dropped the project before giving it further consideration. I was trying to come up with a flexy and strong IFS/IRS setup that would reliably drive 33" tires with low gears and ARB lockers. Too much time and money for what it could do...
