August 22, 200718 yr Should the RPM's drop a little if the headlights are on? Because it does! Is that good? Maybe i need a new Alt? Mine's the org from Jan 1992:slobber:
August 23, 200718 yr how much drop are we talking about here? like just a little dip in the idle, or is it dropping the idle way down? if it's the latter, you've got issues, maybe the voltage regulator (alternator), or excessive resistance in the headlight circuit or something, even a dieing battery. ~Erik~
August 23, 200718 yr your engine is feeling an additional mechanical load at the alternator because of the additional amperage draw on the electrical system. You understand that your alternator basically generates voltage by spinning one magnet through an electro magnet, right? Well, put it this way: that electro magnet is made MUCH stronger when you cut the lights on, or the AC, or a 17,000 watt sound system. Its just like cutting your air conditioner on. This is why "electrical superchargers" aren't the no-brainer super bolt on that they sound like; the power gained by the fan motor can in NO way match the power sucked up by the electrical draw.
August 23, 200718 yr Author Yeah i know all about alternators. And the battery is only a month and a half old. And doesnt drop to much, Let's say it's ideling at 850RPM and you turn the lights on it will go to about 600RPM. SO IDK..... I think it's fine because i havent had any trouble, I will see about a new Alt soon. I just wanted to know.. Thanx for the insight all!
