Need suggestions

Recommended Posts

I have an 84 Brat GL, manual, non-turbo. It is popping/thumping in the front in.

What it is not...Axles, CV joints, wheel bearings, transmission. Is there replaceable bearings in the transaxle? Any other suggestions?

I love my Brat. I miss my Brat. :-\ I've been driving a borrowed 1994 Plymouth Voyager.:Flame:

P.S. I'm not really a new user. It's just been a really long time since I've been to the board.

I would say you have a record there. Most of our members from 03 have at least 100 posts:-p

Welcome back.

It sounds like a CV going out. To help better diagnose it, you will need to look at both ends of the axles. Check both of them for torn boots. Most likely the one thats torn is the bad CV.

It is not (repeat not) a CV joint, axle, wheel bearings, or transmission. We've spent the last 4 months replacing everything and the replacing it again. We've had transmission shops verify it isn't the transmission. I've replaced the rack and pinion, 1/2 axles (both), wheel bearings (driver's and passenger's sides), tie rods, suspension arm bushings, etc.

While the wheels are on the ground, it makes the noise constantly. The faster I go, the faster it makes the noise. When we jack the front end up in the air it sounds like the gears are trying to catch on one side of the transaxle. So, does anyone know if there are bearings of any kind that can be replaced or is there something else that could be causing the noise?
