September 7, 200718 yr MY97 Legacy, the power window functions fine except at the end of traveling up it sort of shifts out a bit at the bottom makes a clunk noise and goes 1/4" past the front triangular seal (it's actually split the top a bit). I took off the door panel but didn't notice anything out of place (I'm no expert), the inner and outer guide pads seem to be in place but I noticed that on the outside of the glass there is a 1/2" wide faint scratch along the height of the window that aligns with the rear guides. Any ideas if this an adjustment problem?
September 7, 200718 yr One of the window stops is probably out of whack/loose/broken. I haven't really dug into the power windows that much...so I can't say for sure how it's put together.
September 7, 200718 yr Author Yeah I figured there must be a window stop of somekind, But I really couldn't find or identify it. Anyone know what I should be looking for?
September 7, 200718 yr hmmm i'm familiar with these but my memory is vague too. the easiest way to fix this is to take both door panels off and alternately inspect each stopper. do it multiple times, all the way up, while moving, etc. you will notice one isn't like the other. make the broken one like the good one. the way i've seen it (on a 97 legacy), is you just unbolt one stopper and rotate/move it so it catches properly. it was the one closer to the front of the car so to speak, not by the latch. i can't remember why, but it would not go back in place without unbolting it. or of course yours could actually be broken...there are a couple possibilities.
September 7, 200718 yr Author Thanks for the answers so far. grossgary, What is the "stopper" exactly? I see a pair of what I'd call guides at the top of the inner and outter doorframe, the outer ones have a clothlike patch on them and the inner ones look like white plastic. They oppose each other with the glass in between. The inner ones have bolt adjustments to make them closer/farther from the glass. Are these what you're calling a stop? Or are the stops inside the door itself and if so do they travel with the glass and it's slides or are the stationary? I could take the panel off again and take some pics if I have to.
September 7, 200718 yr The stops are stationary. And should be mounted to the door itslef. I haven't had a door panel off a gen2 legacy in a while so I am of little help as to where they are.
September 7, 200718 yr i believe the stops are fixed and have a 10mm bolt attaching them, and they are adjustable. they may not be your problem, just a suggestion to look at. they should keep the window from going "too far" like you said they are doing. did you compare it to the other side? that is key and really helps when looking at these window mechanisms. unless you've seen one before and have a good idea how they work, they can be really confusing and not make any sense.
September 7, 200718 yr Author that is key and really helps when looking at these window mechanisms. unless you've seen one before and have a good idea how they work, they can be really confusing and not make any sense. Yep, I figure the confusing part out all by myself... So from the answers so far the "guides" as I call them that are on the top of the frame aren't what I'm looking for? I'll have to pull open the plastic sound proofing and look inside the door itself.
September 8, 200718 yr My passenger side windwo on my '99 Outback does the same thing. I will have to take a look at it. Although that probably won't be untill sunday. If i figure out what it is ill post up some pictures.
