Exhaust Leak/Replacement Legacy

Recommended Posts

It looks like I need to replace the back catalytic converter. The pipe leading into it rusted and broke away. Also, the pipes on the "Y" pipe leading into the front catalytic converter are rusting. I don't see any holes, yet.

I think I might replace the system at least to the 2nd catalytic converter. Any recommendations on where and what to buy? Any comments on the Magnaflow system?

Thanks.

SHop around. Start at the online dealers for a baseline price. Next look up walker pipes on the net, and get prices from them. Go to JC whitney and look there (thats where i usually get my cats from). Don't buy off ebay. Also there is one really bad supplier on line, do a search here he may come up.

Cats are fairly free flow, so i dont know if it will pay to get a high flow one for a sooby.

I am not questioning your judgment, but in these parts I find the flanges that connect the two pipes, with a "donut" in between, seem to rust away, allowing the joint to come apart giving the appearance of a major disaster.

If, after you have given this a second look, and find this to be the case, an auto parts store will be more than happy to sell you 2 part replacement flanges (for roughly $15 each) that will get you out of trouble.

I know exhaust systems are considered a "consumable", but they are really expensive for Subaru cars, and if you can get a fix going for under $50 it really is a "bonus".

Actually exhaust systems have stopped being a consumable a long time ago. If the original lasted 129,000 miles, thats not a consumable, thats just "things dont last for ever".

It's really common for the flange to rust away. Especially the one on the second convertor. It's an easy fix with a repair flange. Most any parts store can get them for under $10.

If you need a y pipe I have several used dual port ones that will fit. I can sell you one for $20, I'm not that far from allentown. I might have convertors for sale also, I will know for sure in a week or so.

Ok then, partially consumable? If you get a look at the turbo crossover pipe with the shields off you might change your mind, last time I saw a cheesy tin bellows on an exhaust was on a crapola Dodge, both designed to fail, and fail expensively!

I'm at 325,000 + mi on mine, less the muffler, and crapola crossover.

Magnaflow sounds awesome on a suby!!!!! After doing my 2.2-> 2.5 DOHC swap on my 96 Outback I hung a borla un-el header with a universal Magnaflow and the rumble is perfect, and man is it a low tone. I found it too quiet with the 2nd cat on so it got gutted. The one thing nice about their mufflers is that you don't get the drone running on the highway so its not annoying. I would highly recomend this brand for a Suby. On my RS I had a highflow cat with a Borla header and a Greddy cat back and the Mag. beats the sound hands down.
