Looking at a 97 Impreza sport, it needs a tranny its a 5 speed manual, my question is what tranny is that? I have a 5 speed out of a 90 legacy will that work? of different ratios?? Scott

search for "final drive" or "gear ratio" and you should find the charts, there are rather explicit lists out there for manual trans stuff, very easy to find. the auto trans now that's much harder.

seems the final drive is closely related to what engine is in the car and whether it's manual/automatic. i would guess the legacy will be a 3.9 and the impreza OBS will be a 4.11. but i am not sure. but no matter, just swap the rears as well, that little bit difference won't matter. or swap the front diffs if you're really ambitious and want to keep it identical.

if that trans has torque bind, you could convert it to RWD or FWD and not do anything!

Torque bind whats that, is that the center diff in the trans going bad?

hey no poking fun, are you joking? anyway, yeah that's exactly right, the center diff can lock up. if it's bad enough you can run it in FWD or RWD like that.
car has sold so i wont be getting it
Too bad that you missed out on it, but there's a chart in the USRM on transmission types for the EJ cars. Many different gearsets and final drive ratios, but if you have the correct matching front and rear diff ratios, most of the gearboxes interchange. I wound up putting a '95 Legacy sedan gearbox and diff into my '97 Impreza L wagon. Works just fine.:)

Ive taken a 93 M/T and put them in a 97 with only swaping the harness on them. But a 90 I'm not so sure. Most are 93-99 compatible.

Oh ya, I have a 97 subaru impreza outback sport tranny in the back yard if your other one doesn't work. Needs 2nd gear sincro replaced. Just haven't got to it yet.
