October 23, 200718 yr Bought it with a blown motor. Put in a junkyard motor and carb (owner removed weber). I blocked off just about every hose connection to the motor, the only ones I left are I think the one going to the interior and the carb bowl vent. I also blocked off the egr system because I couldn't get the metal 90degree tube off of the old motor. Also have no filter on the carb, it is just open to the environment. Used felpro gaskets for the intake and exhaust from autozone (didn't know they sucked until afterwards) This thing runs like a smelly dog turd. tries to die when you hit the gas. Idles bad. Compression is all 150 +-10. I can remove both plug wires on the passenger side and it doesn't change the idle at all (even when pulling them both at the same time), but dies when you try to rev it. The idle gets really bad when you remove either of the wires on the driver side however. I thought that I might have the wires messed up but I checked and they seem to be right. Thought maybe the plugs were cracked or something but I switched them around and nothing changed. What the heck is going on? Compression is good, wires are good, plugs are good. Maybe something with the timing? Oh and about me blocking everything off on the intake...The carb setup is a temporary thing, I almost have all the parts for the spfi conversion.
October 23, 200718 yr First. Welcome to the board. Best place for Subaru info on the net. Second. Good to see another member from Tennessee on here. I am not too familiar with the EA82 series cars but I figured I would extend salutations from 70 miles to your west.
October 23, 200718 yr Author thanks for the welcome, maybe we can go have some fun when I get this thing in good condition. Got plans for the spfi conversion, a lift, and 6 lug conversion (already got the wheels!). Thanks again for the greeting!
October 23, 200718 yr First things first - have you checked/replaced ht leads, dist cap, spark plugs etc?
October 23, 200718 yr Author No I have not replaced the wires or cap and rotor, but I did replace the plugs. Stupidity on my part I suppose, I guess I should replace all the parts involved in a proper tuneup before I waste the boards time. Sorry, I will due a stage 0 and then see what problems there are. And yes I agree, the carb will be used for target practice very soon.
