it's an auto trans. when i put the trans in 1 the car holds back (engine breaking). does this effect only the front wheels or all the wheels

all the wheels. Putting the selector in 1 forces center clutch pack lockup.

if i'm going down a hill will all 4 wheels hold my back or will just the front. what i mean is do the rear wheels kick in or do they only work when i'm on the gas.

Putting the gear selector in 1st or reverse causes the duty c solenoid to lock at a 50/50 split under all conditions.
