Chinese Bearings And Other Stuff...

Featured Replies

Hey All:

Sorry it's been so long. You know the story -- Been Busy!!! Also, the Subes have been doing well, so there has been no need to post... until now. Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag, had been doing great. It was having that sluggish thing that happens when the terminals on the TPS are corroded. This summer I went out and spend a whopping $8.99 on a bottle of MAP spray and used that to clean the terminals and the MAP while I was at it. All was good. In the last few weeks, Muph was starting to sing a little bit. I had heard that sound before, and was planning to check all the bearing tomorrow. Well tomorrow came and went, then a week went by. Then two... And yesterday it happened. Murph just flat out quit. I was only a block away from the house too! I knew exactly what it problem was. I jetisoned my timing belt covers long ago, and could see the drivers side belt just hanging there.

Took the front stuff off today, and found the idler belt pulley had froze, causing the belt to jump off. It didn't strip the teeth from the belt, but I'll replace it anyway. I had replaced that bearing two years ago when I got the new engine for Murph. I'm guessing I got one of those Chinese bearings I have heard so much about (are the Chinese using lead in the bearing as well as toys?). I also found the pin that holds the harmonic balancer was bent and just about to give way. There is wear on both the front timing gear and the balancer where the pin goes, so I might drill a new whole in the balancer for a new pin. Oh, and the PS pump is leaking. I pulled the pulley off and I can see the bearing. Isn't there suppoed to be a seal, like the front cam or rear main seal, in there?

That's all for now. Will update soon. I must now shower and get ready to go see a movie (Golden Compass).

I recently had the pully off a power steering pump. There was what looked like a standard 62xx ball bearing with a seal on the outside. The standard 62xx bearings can be bought with shields, seals, contact seals, or nothing. I can't be 100% sure, because I wasn't specifically looking to replace the bearing.

FSM show the seal behind the bearing. But it calls for disassembly of the pump body to replace. But it can be done.

It's Saturday. That means a trip to the Bone-Yard. I am going to pick up a PS pump for murph, and a few parts for Red, the 94 Alpine wagon. She needs a new(er), non-leaking rack, and also a rt rear abs brake sensor. Wish me happy hunting.
