What to do with cracked heads

Featured Replies

My heads off my ea82 turbo are both cracked between the valves and exhaust ports. Can i get the cracks in the exhaust ports welded up and not worry about the other cracks. Who would be able to weld those.

Thanks Jason

Small cracks between the valves (aka "bridge cracks") should be okay. I know there was a Subaru TSB about them... maybe somebody around here knows where it is. I don't think that welding cracks in the exhaust ports is your best option. It's probably much easier and cheaper to come up with replacement heads... lots of parts here in the NW.

Of the last 4 EA82t engines I'[ve torn down, ALL of them have the BTV cracks. Those are pretty much fine, as long a the valve seats are still in place.

5 of the 8 heads had exhaust crack as well(it's worth mention that a few of these motors ran, pretty well actually, even with the cracks, they don't ALWAYS go through to the waterjacket.)BUT,... I'd say it's pretty damn hard to find uncracked heads used. And new or "rebuilt" heads cost $200-400 dollars, depending on source.

In contrast, welding my heads cot me $60 per head. That was at a racing specialist in Wisconsin, buit I'm sure there is somneone in you're neck of the woods. Talk to the local sprint track guys.

ok thanks guys

I purchased two used heads with no cracks for $45 ea from a junkyard in NY. It took a while to find heads with no cracks, but worth it I think. I think those little cracks could possibly spread, which seems an unnesissary risk.
